Wednesday, May 14 from 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM
Spice of Life Event Center, located at the Flatirons Golf Course
5706 Arapahoe Rd, Boulder, CO 80302 [MAP]
Does the judicial system confuse you? Questions about how it works? This month, Colorado Supreme Court Justice Gregory J. Hobbs, Jr. will give DWBC a presentation on the judicial system. He will answer questions about the legal process in general, and may be able to shed light on some of the difficult issues in the courts today, including the role of the courts in deciding increasingly political issues.

Governor Romer appointed Justice Hobbs to the Colorado Supreme Court in 1996. Prior to that, Justice Hobbs practiced law for 25 years, with emphasis on water, environment, land use and transportation. He also taught sixth grade in New York City and served with the Peace Corps in South America.

In addition to being a great speaker, Justice Hobbs is an accomplished author and poet. In In Praise of Fair Colorado: The Practice of Poetry, History, and Judging, Justice Hobbs wrote about our responsibilities as citizens, to each other and to the environment. He also explained the workings of our state's highest court, analyzing court opinions ranging from prior restraint in the Kobe Bryant case to whether a tent is a habitation for Fourth Amendment search and seizure purposes.

Cost: $18.00 for lunch and program. RSVP (yes only) to Sharon Conley at rsvp.dwbc@gmail.com or at 303-554-0960, no later than Sunday, May 11, 2008.

Our May meeting is also our Annual Business Meeting. In April, a new slate of officers, a change in dues, and an amendment to the Bylaws were presented for your consideration. They are: Edie Hooton, President; Soraya Smith, Vice-President; Betty Hoye, Treasurer; and Linda Flack, Secretary.

Proposed change in dues: Dues are currently $20 or whatever you want to pay. The board proposes changing the dues to $30 or whatever you want to pay. This change encourages those who wish to do so to give more. DWBC can transfer dues to the Small Donor Committee, and can then donate this money to candidates.

Proposed change to Bylaws: Article III, Section 3 states that the dues shall be set upon recommendation of the Executive Board and majority vote of the members. It states further: "The dues thus determined, shall take effect in the next calendar year." If the members vote to make the recommended dues change, the Executive Board would like the members vote to change the Bylaws to read: "The dues, thus determined, shall take effect in the next calendar year."
